Nicole S. White
What is your concentration?
Creative Writing: Poetry!
Why are you majoring in English?
I am fascinated by the art of storytelling through non-traditional methods. I want to devote my collegiate experience to the exploration of the craft because poetry has always helped me make sense of the world. For me, poetry is about discovery, preservation, and liberation. I couldn’t imagine spending four years studying anything else.
What was your favorite English class at Georgia State (so far)?
My Senior Seminar was unforgettable. Dr. Beth Gylys is a phenomenal professor. Her welcoming presence cultivated experimentation in my work. A family-like structure was built with my peers, in which our concern for one another’s poetic growth and general livelihood couldn’t have been more authentic.
What are some of your extra-curricular projects or activities?
I am a performance poet/spoken word artist, dancer, and pancake enthusiast.
What long-term plans or aspirations do you have for your career?
I will be a freelance teaching artist—meaning performing poetry and teaching workshops about the relationship between social justice and art. This summer, I am completing a paid internship with the Sadie Nash Leadership Project, a non-profit organization that designs programs to promote leadership and activism for teenage girls.
