Northumbria Exchange Program

Features of the GSU-Northumbria Exchange Program in British and American Cultural Studies
Sophomore English majors have an exciting option to consider for study abroad in their junior year!

We recently began a two-year student exchange program with the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, England. Georgia State fees finance the year in England. For further information, contact Professor Tanya Caldwell at engtmc@panther.gsu.edu.

This exchange program involves the History and English departments at Georgia State and the Department of Historical and Critical Studies at the University of Northumbria. This joint studies program involves a cohort of approximately 15-20 students per school per year from GSU and Northumbria. Students at GSU begin the program in their junior year. Students from Northumbria enter the program in their first year; Northumbria, as opposed to Georgia State, has a 3-year program. Students in the program will gain a concentration in British and American Cultural Studies but retain their major status in their respective departments.

You may click here to find out more information about the exchange on the University System of Georgia's website. The exchange number on the page is 179.

What is It?
The program is a 2-year commitment for English and History majors at about Junior level. Participants graduate with a MAJOR in English or History and a MINOR in British and American Studies.

Program Structure
The FIRST YEAR of the program is spent at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, northern England (only an hour to Edinburgh on the train). The SECOND YEAR is spent at GSU studying with the same group of British students who come back with the Americans.

University Campus Curriculum
2 required courses in British and American cultures in each of the 4 semesters spent in the program. Otherwise participants are free to choose electives and those taken both here and in Newcastle can be from ANY department.

Fees
GSU students pay GSU fees for their year in Newcastle. This means that those with a HOPE scholarship get to study abroad free for a year! Amazing deal!

Housing
It is mandatory for students in the program to stay in accommodation on the Northumbria campus. The cost of this is about the same as what you would pay for a year at the GSU Village.

British Classes
Classes are much less work-intense than here. Most classes require only one end-of-term essay. This gives you plenty of time to assimilate and travel.

Travel
Dublin at night This is what the American students love best about their year abroad. Affordable Britrail and Eurail passes allow huge travel opportunities. Students in past years have traveled to France, Amsterdam, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Prague among other places.
