Since 2007, the Department of English has sponsored the “Shakespeare in Italy” study abroad program. Dr. Paul J. Voss designs and directs the three-week course (offered to graduate and undergraduate students). The incredible program fuses the history of Rome with the plays and sonnets of Shakespeare. This year we had nine graduate students and eight undergraduates living in Rome (and exploring the Forum, Colosseum, the Vatican Museums, and the Borghese Gallery, among other highlights) as well making excursions into Florence, Orvieto, and Ostia Antica. Rome provides a stunning literary experience for the class, and Shakespeare raises profound questions about those very experiences. The program will next be offered in May 2024.
