FIRST YEAR WRITING
Georgia State's First-Year Writing Program is one of the largest writing programs at an urban Research 1 university in the South.
We offer more than 220 sections of English 1101 and 1102. These courses alone benefit more than 5,000 students every year.
Georgia State's Guide to First-Year Writing is authored by our instructors of English 1101 and 1102.
Georgia State’s First-Year Writing Program (FYWP) offers a wide range of opportunities for undergraduates in all fields of study and provides the highest level of instruction for students enrolled in 1000-2000 level courses in composition, rhetoric, literature and business writing. Guided by the Conference on College Composition and Communication’s “Principles for the Postsecondary Teaching of Writing,” Georgia State’s FYWP is committed to sound writing instruction, linguistic diversity, critical and professional literacies and the rhetorical power of writing.
We design curriculum, suggest textbooks and support instructors teaching FYWP courses. Our work is foundational not only to the English Department but to the university at large. Indeed, every student who begins a college career at Georgia State will take several of our courses. Over the three semesters, we offer approximately 256 first-year writing class sections and 28 introductory literature classes. Most students in these courses don’t major in English, so these courses may be the last they’ll take in English. Thus, our teaching offers many students the most intensive instruction they’ll receive during college in language theory, rhetoric and writing and literature.
If You Are a Student
You might be trying to decide what English courses to take, to find out whether you can get credit for an English course you took elsewhere, or to find information on how to exempt one of our composition courses. Here, you should be able to find those answers and more. If you don’t see the information you need, contact us for help.
